Grenactics

Grenactics - The art or act of skillfully fraggin one’s opponent with the use of grenades or other compact explosive devices that are thrown by hand or projected such as grenade launchers, pipe bombs, plasma grenades, etc.

The term originated during a Quake 2 deathmatch.

It is short for grenade tactics.

The way the grenade bounced off the wall and entered the gap in the opposite wall to make the kill demonstrates the use of grenactics.

The term grenactics was coined by me during a Quake 2 deathmatch. I am an average to OK player of FPS (first person shooters) and have more fun ruining a person’s frag by blowing myself up along with them. During this particular deathmatch, I kept ending up with the grenade launcher as my weapon. Someone ran past me and I gave chase and soon they were running up a series of stairs on the level. Now almost any weapon in the game, they would have been safe. Unfortunately, the grenades from the grenade launch will ricochet off walls in accordance with basic physics. So when he ran up the stairs, I popped a couple grenades up after him. After bouncing off a couple walls, both grenades hit him square and killed him. This got everyone’s attention and they asked what that was and how I managed to pull that off. I simply replied that is was grenactics.

Another example that predates the term occurred during a Duke Nukem 3D match between a couple friends. I was not playing in this one. One guy ran and hid, crouched, in this little cubby with the door closed in the hopes of surprising the other guy. What he didn’t realize is he was seen making that move. The other guy quickly opened the door, threw in a pipe bomb, closed the door and detonated the bomb before the guy could even react to the situation. When the pipe bomb went off, the guy died and blood came out from under the little door. Pure grenactics. On another side note, when this transpired I was drinking a soda and could not help laughing and the situation involuntarily. This caused the soda to go into my lungs instead of my stomach and nearly drowned from a mouthful of soda.

Last example is to show that you don’t really have to live to demonstrate grenactics. The last FPS I played a fair amount of deathmatches with was Halo 2. A few of the guys I played with could run circles around me so I developed the simple philosophy that I was going to die anyways so I might as well take you with me. I would collect up a few plasma grenades (aka spiders) which stick to targets and take off running. When I would encounter someone, I would charge at them, tossing grenades, and would end with trying to jump away to survive. 9 out of 10 times I died but, so did they. I had a knack for landing plasma grenades on my target so my death was never in vain. I never won a match, but I had a lot of fun.
