Along Came a Spider Part 1
She closed the door behind her as she entered the dark office and walked over to her desk. She flipped on the desk lamp to bring some light to the predawn darkness. The room was large but crowded by file cabinets that lined the walls and boxes piled up on the floor, all of which made up the collective histories of every patient housed at the institution, past and present.
The desk as a contrast to the rest of the room; where the surroundings were cluttered and chaotic, the desk was well organized and tidy. Besides the lamp, only a single file, a pad of paper, clock, and tape recorder sat on the top of the desk. The one thing out of place on the desk was a large envelope.
She sat down at the desk and removed a pen from one of the desk’s drawers. Setting the pen down on the pad, she opened the file and flipped through it to review the patient’s long history and her previous notes and remarks.
She then dumped the contents of the envelope on the table. A small diary, worn with age, landed on the table along with several unfolded paperclips. She thumbed through the diary up and understood the use of the paperclips immediately. Brownish red from oxygenation, the diary was written in blood with the use of the paperclips as pens. She skimmed the entries which brought about a new understanding and more insight into the patient.
When she finished reading, she picked up the recorder and hit the record button.
“August 8, 4:45am, I was called in to the office in regards to several items discovered in Steven’s possession during one of the nightly patient checks. It appears that we have found his diary; one he has been keeping for some time now.
I am still not sure where he got the diary or paperclips, but he had been keeping them hidden in a tear of the padding in the corner of the room. An orderly caught him as he was putting the diary back into its hiding place.
Steven did not cooperate and had to be sedated and restrained in a jacket.
I have only briefly flipped through the pages, but I have already read enough to know that he has written in great detail how he planned out the killings. I have a feeling that it will give us further understanding in how he executed his twisted fantasies since Steven has not always been as forthcoming with details I had hoped.
I have heard once or twice from Steven that everything was perfect except one thing. I am hoping to find out what he feels led to his downfall; what that one thing is.
It will take some time to read and analyze his diary.
On a personal note, I am more than excited about the diary. No one knows for sure how many bodies there are. It may just be the few found or it could be so many more. Just from what little Steven has said, it is hard to say for certain.
Steven has fascinated me from the start. He typically is quiet and reserved and comes off quiet charismatic at times. Several female staff members, and I must admit I am in that group, have at some point felt an attraction to Steven. He can easily make you forget that he is patient and what got him sent here in the first place.
Then there is The Spider and that side of Steven is one I try to avoid as much as possible.”
She hit stop and set the recorder down on the table. She stretched briefly in the chair before picking up the diary and opening it to the first page.
