The Thief
The dagger slid out from between the man ribs with far more ease than the thief thought. The thief wiped the blood off of his blade on the dead man’s tunic and put it back in its sheath. The thief robbed the dead body, taking all the man’s money. The thief pulled out two gold coins and placed the rest in a bag within the folds of his clothing. He knelt down beside his victim and stared into the man’s still open eyes. The thief closed the man’s eyes and placed a coin on each eyelid. He got up and walked out from the alley and down the street.
The thief stopped at a street vendor and looked over the selections. He bought a hunk of bread and some meat with the dead man’s money and continued his walk down the street. He sat down on a street bench in front of a church and ate his newly acquired food. As he ate, he counted the dead man’s money. Over and over again, he counted it not really knowing why.
When he finished his food, he got up and entered the church. The thief took the money out again and placed it in the donation box. He walked out of the holy sanctuary without looking back.
