First Date
He continued to pace back and forth in front of the movie theater entrance. A walk he has been making for the last hour and a half. An hour and a half that he has spent waiting, waiting for his date. A date that has not yet shown up.
Exhausted from his continuous pacing, he finally sat down just as his watch chimed the time. 10:00 p.m. and she is two hours late for their date. He still sat even though he didn’t know why he stayed. She had obviously ditched him, but why. He sat in front of the movie theater and pondered about the situation.
After talking with her every night for over a week, he had finally got up the nerve to ask her out on a date. He expected her to tell him no, but was surprised when she said ok.
He took the cell phone from his pocket and dialed the number again without being conscious of the numbers he dialed. The phone rang and rang, still no answer. He left a message on her answering machine again, even though he didn’t expect her to call.
He finally got up and disappointedly headed to his car. He decided waiting for her was not going to do him any good. It had been a long night and he needed to get some sleep. So he headed home without ever seeing her or the movie they were going to see.
It was early the next morning when he got the call. He didn’t really expect to get the call, but he did get it. As soon as the short conversation on the phone was over, he hung it up. He then ran out of the house, and jumped in his car. He was going to see her.
He drove as fast as he could. He had only a limited time that he could see her and he wasn’t going to be late. He was not going to miss her, not this time. He parked his car as close as he could and ran to the door.
He stood in the doorway to her room and all was silent, but just for a second. It was a second trapped in all eternity, though. And the silence was broken by the sounds of the life support equipment.
They said she was hit by a drunk driver on her way to their date. The drunk driver got away without a scratch. She, on the other hand, was left comatose. No one knew when or if she would ever wake up.
The sight before him was more than he could take. He became weak in the knees and was no longer able to stand. Tears filled his eyes and the room became one big blur until he was no longer able to see.
